Markus Stocker has been called "an aristocrat among today's cellists" by the New York Times. He was heralded equally enthusiastically in London, Paris and Vienna. He regularly tours the Far East, where he has performed in China, Vietnam and Singapore with various symphony orchestras. He has also performed in Israel, South Africa and North America. He was born in Basle in 1945, studied at the Basle Academy of Music and received the Soloist Diploma in 1970. In the following years he studied with Pierre Fournier, André Navarra and Paul Tortelier. Apart from going on concert tours he is a music teacher at the Conservatory of Brisbane (Australia).
